Job Description

Merchandise Buyers are executives within the Bob’s Discount Furniture organization who are responsible for all aspects of merchandise procurement – a true make it or break it position for our merchandise driven company.

The primary function of the Merchandise Buyer is to purchase strategic assortments for assigned classifications that will set the value bar in the marketplace and maximize sales and profitability of Bob’s Discount Furniture.  As a very important and highly visible member of the Bob’s management team, it is of paramount importance that the Merchandise Buyer upholds the principles of honesty, integrity and fairness when interacting with employees, suppliers and customers.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop private label assortments that support the Bob’s Discount Furniture merchandise strategies of value and style for assigned categories
  • Analyze assigned categories and develop yearly business plans that will drive sales and  profitability, identify process improvements, sourcing opportunities, and marketing initiatives
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and price products for assigned merchandise categories within gross margin parameters
  • Regularly shop and analyze digital and brick and mortar competitors to make intelligent buying decisions
  • Work hand in hand with Replenishment Director and Group Manager(s) to establish parameters for ordering merchandise that will minimize investment and maximize turns 
  • Communicate and continuously work with the replenishment team to assure an adequate flow of goods as inventory integrity remains the responsibility of the Buyer
  • Communicate and continuously work with the store group, training team, visual display management, and marketing team to assure that the assortments maximize sales potential
  • Understand and maintain all regulatory standards for social and product compliance
  • Maintain strong vendor relationships
  • Work collaboratively and foster positive relationships with the merchandising team and between all departments within Bob’s Discount Furniture 
  • Strong leadership skills required and the ability to set clear goals and expectations while attracting, retaining, motivating, and developing the merchandising team
  • Complete performance appraisals on time
     

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5-8 years’ experience in a buying and sourcing role specifically within home furnishings or furniture chain
  • Experience directly managing and/or mentoring others.  Strong leadership skills
  • Solid merchandising experience
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Full understanding of and competence with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Access and Word
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills.  Excellent mathematical reasoning skills -- The ability to understand and analyze sales numbers, as well as use logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Good coordination skills; ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage one's own time and the time of others
  • Excellent identification of key causes; identifying the causal factors that must be changed to achieve a goal
  • Openness to extensive travel
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with/exposure to SAP
